Buying the Perfect Engagement Ring: 10 Expert Tips
Choosing an engagement ring feels overwhelming until you break it down. After nearly 30 years helping couples at E.C.One, we've found that most decisions come down to three things - the stone, the setting, and the band. Once you've worked through those, the rest is about finding the right jeweller and making the moment count.
Here are our 10 expert tips for getting it right.

Tip 1: Start with the stone
The stone shapes everything else - the setting, the metal, the overall feel of the ring. The main options are:
Diamond - the classic choice. Timeless, incredibly durable, and available in a huge range of cuts from round brilliant to oval, pear and emerald cut. Lab-grown diamonds are now a popular ethical alternative at a lower price point.
Sapphire - the most popular coloured stone for engagement rings. Blue is best known, but teal, green, yellow and pink sapphires are equally beautiful and harder than most other gemstones, making them an excellent everyday choice.
Emerald - rich, deeply coloured and distinctive. Suits vintage and art deco-inspired settings particularly well.
Other gemstones - tourmaline, ruby, morganite and salt-and-pepper diamonds all create rings that stand apart from the traditional.
Tip 2: Choose your setting
The setting determines how the stone sits on the finger and shapes the character of the ring.
Solitaire - one stone, one band. The most timeless option and the easiest to pair with a wedding band later.
Trilogy - a centre stone flanked by two smaller stones, representing the past, present and future.
Halo - a centre stone surrounded by smaller diamonds or gemstones, adding brilliance and making the centre stone appear larger.
Others worth considering - cluster, bezel, east-west, hidden halo and Moi et Toi designs all offer something more distinctive.
Tip 3: Think about the band
The band affects both comfort and how the ring works alongside a wedding band — worth thinking about earlier than most people do.
Plain - available from 1.5mm to 5mm. Narrower feels delicate; wider makes a statement.
Diamond-set - pavé, eternity-style or star-set stones add sparkle throughout.
V-shaped or curved - sits flush against certain stone shapes; ideal if you're already thinking about stacking with a wedding band.
Textured - hammered or hand-finished surfaces catch the light differently and give the ring an artisanal feel.
Tip 4: Research your partner's style
An engagement ring should reflect your partner’s personal style, not just what you think looks impressive.
Take notice of the jewellery they already wear:
• Do they prefer yellow gold, white gold, or platinum?
• Are their pieces minimal and modern, or vintage-inspired?
• Do they favour delicate designs or bold statement pieces?
If you're unsure, it can help to:
• Ask a close friend or family member who knows their taste
• Look through saved Instagram or Pinterest boards
• Check the jewellery they wear most often
At E.C.One, we often work with partners or friends who bring inspiration images to help guide the process.
Tip 5: See the stone in person
A diamond certificate tells you the specifications but not how the stone actually looks. Two diamonds with identical grades can perform completely differently in terms of light and sparkle depending on their proportions and cut quality. Seeing a stone in person is always worth it - book an appointment to view stones with our team.
Diamonds remain the most popular choice for engagement rings because they symbolise strength, commitment, and timeless beauty.
When choosing a diamond, you’ll often hear about the 4 C’s:
Cut - how well the diamond reflects light
Colour - how colourless the stone appears
Clarity - the number of internal inclusions
Carat - the weight (size) of the diamond
Today many couples are also exploring more distinctive stones, including:
• Unusual diamond cuts
• Coloured gemstones like sapphires
These options can create a ring that feels more unique and personal.

Tip 6: Bring a photo when you visit
A photo of your partner - or of jewellery they love - helps enormously. It allows us to understand their aesthetic, suggest suitable styles, and consider practical factors like lifestyle. If your partner works with their hands, for example, we might suggest a lower-profile setting that's more comfortable for everyday wear.
Tip 7: Don't stress about finger size
Most rings can be resized after the proposal. If you can borrow a ring they already wear on the correct finger, bring it - but if not, we'll work with a standard size and adjust afterwards. It's one of the most common concerns couples have, and one of the easiest to solve.

Tip 8: Set a realistic budget
There's no rule about how much to spend. A good jeweller will help you find the best design within your budget rather than push you upwards. A few approaches that help: choosing multiple smaller stones rather than one large one, selecting a distinctive gemstone over a diamond, or prioritising craftsmanship and design over stone size.

Tip 9: Ask about ethical sourcing
More couples today want their ring to reflect their values as well as their taste. At E.C.One, ethical sourcing is central to everything we do and are always happy to explain exactly where your materials come from.
When buying a ring, it’s worth asking questions such as:
• Where were the diamonds or gemstones sourced?
• Is the gold recycled or Fairtrade?
• Who made the ring?
At E.C.One we specialise in ethical jewellery, using recycled precious metals and responsibly sourced stones wherever possible.

Tip 10: Plan the proposal
The setting doesn't need to be elaborate - it just needs to feel like you. Some of the most memorable proposals happen at home over dinner. Others involve the London Eye, a favourite holiday spot, or a long hike. What makes it memorable is that it felt authentic and personal.
