The cut of a diamond is often considered the most important of the 4 C’s because it determines how a diamond handles light, and ultimately, how it sparkles.
Unlike shape, which describes a diamond’s outline, cut refers to the precision of its proportions, symmetry and facet placement. When these elements are expertly balanced, light enters the stone, reflects internally, and is returned through the top - creating brilliance and life.
A well-cut diamond displays three key qualities:
Brightness
The white light reflected from the diamond’s surface and interior.
Fire
The dispersion of white light into flashes of spectral colour - those rainbow glints that catch the eye.
Scintillation
The pattern of light and dark areas, and the sparkle produced as the diamond moves.
A diamond with an excellent cut will appear lively, bright and balanced - even if its colour or clarity is slightly lower. A poorly cut diamond, on the other hand, can look dull regardless of its other qualities.
At E.C.One, we prioritise beautifully cut diamonds that maximise light performance, ensuring each stone feels considered, balanced and full of character.
