How to Choose Your Wedding Band: A Step-by-Step Guide
Choosing a wedding band is easier when you break it into three decisions. Here's how we guide couples through it at E.C.One:
Step 1: Consider your engagement ring setting
The most important starting point is whether your engagement ring is high-set or low-set.
If you have a high-set engagement ring - where the stone sits elevated above the band - most wedding bands will sit neatly underneath the setting. This gives you the most flexibility in style, from a plain polished band to a diamond eternity ring.
If you have a low-set engagement ring - where the stone sits closer to the finger - a straight band may not sit flush alongside it. In this case, you'll likely need a shaped, contoured or bespoke band that curves around your setting for a perfect fit. V-shaped and curved bands are popular choices here.

Step 2: Choose your band width
Band width changes how a ring looks and feels on the hand significantly. As a guide:
1.5mm - delicate and understated; sits beautifully alongside most engagement rings without competing
2.5mm - the most versatile width; elegant enough to wear alone, substantial alongside a stone
3mm and above - a more confident, statement width; works particularly well as a standalone band or with simpler engagement ring settings
If you're planning to stack multiple rings, leaning narrower (1.5–2mm) gives a more layered, effortless look.
|
1.7mm - Barely-there. The most delicate option; almost invisible on the finger and ideal for stacking. |
1.8mm - Whisper-thin with just a little more presence. A favourite for those who prefer understated elegance. |
2mm - Slender but defined. Works beautifully as a solo band or layered with a fine engagement ring. |
|
2.5mm - Our most popular width. Versatile enough to wear alone, refined enough to complement almost any engagement ring. |
3mm - A confident classic. Substantial without being bold; a strong choice for those who want their band to be noticed. |
3.2mm - Slightly wider than classic, with a modern feel. Works well with simpler or lower-set engagement rings. |
|
3.5mm - Strikes a balance between statement and everyday wearability. Particularly suits wider fingers. |
4mm - A genuine statement band. Often chosen as a standalone ring or as a bold complement to a solitaire. |
5mm - Maximum presence. Best worn as a standalone or with a very simple, high-set stone. |
Step 3: Choose your band style
Once you know your width and fit, the style is the fun part. The main categories are:
Plain or knife-edge bands - timeless and architectural; let the metal speak for itself
Textured or hammered bands - hand-finished surfaces catch the light differently at every angle
Diamond-set bands - from a single flush-set stone to a full pavé eternity; adds sparkle that complements most engagement rings
V-shaped or curved bands - designed to nestle alongside low-set or cluster rings
Eternity rings - diamonds all the way around; often chosen as a wedding band or added later as an anniversary upgrade

Why Your Wedding Band Matters Just as Much
Engagement rings get the spotlight - the proposal, the photographs, the moment everyone asks to see.
But the wedding band is the ring you'll actually live in.
It's on your hand while you travel, work, celebrate, and build a life together. It outlasts the wedding day itself. And unlike the engagement ring, which often spends time in a jewellery box, the wedding band rarely leaves your finger.
At E.C.One, we've spent nearly 30 years helping couples choose wedding rings - and we've noticed that the ones who take time over this decision almost always say it was worth it. Not because the ring needs to be complicated or expensive, but because wearing something that was chosen with care feels different to wearing something chosen in a hurry.
A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Shop
Match the metal, not just the style
If you have an engagement ring, the simplest starting point is metal colour. Mixing yellow gold with white gold or platinum can work beautifully as a deliberate choice - but if it's not intentional, it can look mismatched. If you're unsure, bring your engagement ring to your appointment and we'll help you find something that sits well alongside it.
Consider how it will wear over time
Plain bands in recycled yellow gold, white gold or platinum are the most durable choice for everyday wear. Highly polished finishes show scratches more readily than brushed or hammered surfaces - something worth knowing if you work with your hands. Diamond-set bands are beautiful but benefit from occasional checking by a jeweller to ensure the stones remain secure.
You don't have to match your partner
Many couples come to us assuming they need matching rings. You don't. What matters is that you each choose something you'll love wearing - whether that's two identical plain bands, two completely different designs, or something in between. We often help couples find rings that feel like a set without being identical: a shared metal, a similar finish, or a complementary width.
Give yourself more time than you think you need
We recommend booking your wedding ring appointment at least 5–6 weeks before your wedding. If you're considering bespoke designs, engraving, or repurposing inherited jewellery, allow longer. Hand engraving alone adds around two weeks. The final stretch before a wedding moves fast - starting early means the process stays enjoyable rather than stressful.

Making It Personal
The details that make a wedding band feel truly yours are often the smallest ones.
Hand engraving is one of the most enduring ways to personalise a ring - a date, initials, a line that means something only to you. Because we engrave by hand rather than by machine, the result has a warmth and character that lasts.
Repurposing inherited jewellery is something we do regularly at E.C.One. If you have gold jewellery that belonged to a grandparent, or gemstones from a ring that's no longer worn, we can melt them down and recast them into something new. The ring looks entirely modern, but carries something irreplaceable inside it.

Bespoke design doesn't have to mean complicated. Sometimes the most meaningful bespoke pieces are the simplest - a band made to a specific width, with a particular finish, in a metal that holds personal significance. Our designers work with you from a single idea and develop it into something made to last a lifetime.
