OUR JOURNEY SO FAR...

Since the early days of E.C.One, we only wanted to use diamonds that were sourced in areas free from conflict and abuse. When we started in 1997, we became aware of conflicts motivated by diamonds, such as those in Sierra Leone. So, we began asking our diamond suppliers to provide us with a confirmation letter, guaranteeing the diamonds we bought were conflict-free from legitimate sources. Many people thought we were a bit over the top, but with the 2006 opening of the blockbuster film, 'Blood Diamonds', awareness was raised, and real pressure was put on the industry to improve. Reports estimated that as much as 21% of the total production in the 1980s was sold for illegal and unethical purposes.

The Kimberly Process, enacted in 2003, was the diamond industry's attempt to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the supply chain by certificating the trade of stones. It is not a perfect system; however, clear improvements have been made. By 1999, the illegal diamond trade was estimated to have reduced to 4%. Today, The World Diamond Council estimates that it has been virtually eliminated.

All the diamonds we buy at E.C.One continue to come with written guarantees from our suppliers that they have been "purchased from legitimate sources, not involved in funding conflict".

We are committed to tracing the origin of our diamonds. We are proud to partner with a Canadian diamond manufacturer in Toronto. They source their diamonds from Canada, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa through the De Beers group. They have carbon-neutral cutting facilities in Toronto and Vietnam and are a carbon-neutral manufacturer. While they are not our only supplier, they are our first choice, and we will continue to advocate for greater transparency. At E.C.One, we know the country of origin of 80% of our natural mined diamonds. We can guarantee they are mined under ethical conditions, are from conflict-free areas, and adhere to the Kimberly Process.

PROS OF ETHICAL MINING

Natural Diamond mining creates income for local communities. The natural diamond industry supports the livelihoods of over 10 million people involved in the diamond supply chain, often in developing countries that rely on this rare natural resource. For example, in 2021, 88% of Botswana's total exports were diamonds. This impact on local communities should be a significant consideration when discussing the ethical benefits of lab-grown versus Natural diamonds. There is no easy solution when choosing between people and the planet!

We are committed to improving our industry, and we are excited to be at the forefront of working with suppliers to bring more transparency and accountability.
