EC One makes first UK Fairtrade Fairmined wedding rings!

Last week, EC One was chosen as one of 20 licensed UK jewellers to work with the newly certified Fairmined gold. Today, our first 20g of the gold arrived, and we are pleased to say that EC One is officially the first UK jewellery retailer to have made a piece of jewellery from the Fairtrade Fairmined gold. EC One goldsmith and founder Jos Skeates handmade a chunky men’s wedding ring from the gold, which has today been hallmarked by the London Assay Office and will bear the official Fairtrade Fairmined hallmark.

Following an audit by independent certification body FLO-Cert on the first two South American mines to come into the Fairtrade system, the arrival of Fairmined gold is a huge step for the British jewellery industry and something EC One is honoured to involved with.

Jos began making the ring at 9am this morning, so here a few photos of the making process. We’ll keep you updated on what happens to the finished ring, which – as the first ever in the UK – will be deemed priceless by many.

I am delighted that Fairtrade Fairmined Gold is making its way into UK markets. It seems very topical currently with the Royal Wedding facing some pressure to use Fairtrade Gold.

However in the case of the Royal Wedding, is it better to use Fairtrade Gold or Welsh Gold which is essentially fairly traded with good conditions for workers and has far less carbon miles associated with it?
