You may have heard of the ‘carat’ weight of gold; This is a system which grades gold’s purity on a sliding scale of up to 24 carats – so 18 Carat gold is 18 parts gold, 6 parts another metal. Pure gold is far too soft for use in jewellery, so the gold is mixed – or alloyed – with other metals like silver or zinc to harden it. Alloys can also be used to create coloured golds: the gorgeous blush of rose gold, for example, is created by adding copper, whilst mixing in silvery metals, like palladium, will produce white gold. Whatever the Carat, EC One’s white gold is completely nickel free.

With all this wedding fever going on, we’re pleased to announce the arrival of our new engagement rings at EC One. The rings were designed over the summer last year and Kate, Jude and Jos have been busy in the EC One workshop handmaking the rings which are now available at both EC One stores and online.
Each of the designs has been named after famous and adventurous women. We have the Ellen ring, named after round-the-world sailor Ellen McArthur, the Amelia ring, in homage to female pilot Amelia Earhart and carrying on from our classic design, we’ve also introduced the new Princess-cut Emma ring.

Those of you wandering past our stores will have spotted our fabulous Royal Wedding decor, to celebrate next week’s wedding of the year. In homage to all things regal, we’ve gone mad for bunting and all things red, white and blue. Pop in and have a look for yourself, and if you’re lucky you can take home your own Union Jack bow tie. Our favourite part has to be our little shrine to Kate and Wills, with our framed snap of the happy couple. And make sure you don’t miss little Maeby the whippet at EC One Notting Hill, giving everyone a royal hello!
EC One makes first UK Fairtrade Fairmined wedding rings!

Last week, EC One was chosen as one of 20 licensed UK jewellers to work with the newly certified Fairmined gold. Today, our first 20g of the gold arrived, and we are pleased to say that EC One is officially the first UK jewellery retailer to have made a piece of jewellery from the Fairtrade Fairmined gold. EC One goldsmith and founder Jos Skeates handmade a chunky men’s wedding ring from the gold, which has today been hallmarked by the London Assay Office and will bear the official Fairtrade Fairmined hallmark.
Following an audit by independent certification body FLO-Cert on the first two South American mines to come into the Fairtrade system, the arrival of Fairmined gold is a huge step for the British jewellery industry and something EC One is honoured to involved with.
