Alex Monroe Jewellery

What could be more exciting this Spring than a delivery of gorgeous Alex Monroe jewellery, packed full of classic pieces and new favourites to add a touch of whimsical fancy to any outfit! Dainty flowers and cute woodland creatures make Alex Monroe jewellery a firm favourite with both EC One staff and customers.

Alex Monroe was established in 1987, when Alex set up a little studio in South London to design and make jewellery. Now, demand for Alex’s jewellery is worldwide and ever increasing, the simple beauty of nature is always inspiring to Alex, and his love for wildlife and the great outdoors is apparent throughout his collections. We love Alex’s signature style: delicacy and detail, always with a sense of English-ness, and have done since we became one of his first London stockists in 2004.

With gold and silver necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings there will be something to suit every style and budget. One of our favourites this season is the Heart Posey Necklace; a stunning gold plated silver necklace featuring adorable heart pendant formed from entwined flower stems. Artfully placed flower heads sparkle with silver petals and gold plated centres to bring to life this gorgeous, wearable feminine piece.

Creating Bespoke Jewellery With Melissa McArthur

It’s been a busy week as a buyer for EC One with lots of new jewellery deliveries and meetings with designers to discuss new projects. One of my favourite deliveries was from London based jeweller Melissa McArthur.
A few weeks ago I visited Melissa McArthur’s new studio tucked away in Shephards Bush. We had the wonder of rummaging through her gem trays to find pieces to create bespoke jewellery for our SS13 collections. All carefully made in London by Melissa and her team, the combination of the natural stones and the hand twisted signature in Melissa’s bead work allows for a truly unique piece of designer jewellery. After a good hour of sifting through exotic Rubies, alluring Tanzanites and alluring Pearls we managed to create a truly unique jewellery collection specially for the EC One customer.

After we had chosen the colour ways we then had to pick gemstones. Would it be a briolette, onion or brilliant stone? Would it be a faceted stone catching the light or a sleek cabochon? Would it work best in gold plate or silver? On top of that there were over 8 of trays with different jewellery styles to select from too, it’s a good job we had a large cup of Earl Grey to help us through.

After much chain laying, stone nudging and gem shape changes we finally had a beautiful exclusive collection. Above you can see much of the hard work with glittering white druzy too good to resist, especially as a gold earring they scream get me to the beach!

For SS13 you can expect pretty pearl jewellery perfect for adding that finishing touch of Chanel like cool. Electric Labradorite with vivid Kyanite stones and white druzy for far flung escapism with the earrings being my buyers pick. If you’re after something feminine and petite these Blue Topaz and apatite pieces are iseal for keeping cool on balmy summer nights. With it hitting our shelves this weekend you better get it before it’s gone!

Rachel Entwistle | Designer Spotlight

This week the intrepid team at EC One pinned down the foot-loose and fancy-free Rachel Entwistle for a quick chitchat…

How would you describe yourself?
Free-spirited!

Tell us a bit about your job and what you love about it.
I love designing and developing new collections, researching the concepts and meaning behind them. I also enjoy the process of working closely with clients to make bespoke pieces. And the other creative elements that come in- styling at photoshoots and the creative collaborations that are popping up since opening our store Thor & Wistle last March (Rachel shares this store space with fellow-designer Kamilla Thorsen of Dynasty Jewellery).

Which pieces do you find yourself wearing all the time?
The Beetle Pendant in Black Rhodium and a Cross Stud in my inner lobe piercing

What kind of woman wears Rachel Entwistle?
Strong, independent, style-conscious women

Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by nature, culture, and the symbols and myths of humanity. I love travelling and unearthing the meaning behind the symbols and creations of human kind- the elements that link us all together and have deeper meaning. I also love collecting strange and interesting objects, rummaging through flea markets and curiosity shops to find inspiration. As well as just being in nature in all its wonderment. Some of the smallest details bring inspiration.

What’s your most treasured possession?
A Maize & Fertility idol from Mexico

What was the last exhibition / film / concert / play you went to etc….
Death: A self-portrait at the Wellcome Museum

EC One have a Lyrical collection inspired by song lyrics, what’s your favourite song lyric?
“Right here, right now.”

If you could be anywhere in the world right now where would it be?
Right here, right now!

What do you do when you’re not making / designing?
Travelling, festival-ling, small intimate music gigs, lounging with a book, tea & cake, hanging with friends, playing capoeira

Other than jewellery do you have any hidden talents?
I like to dance and play capoeira

What’s your biggest fashion regret?
I don’t have regrets, we all go through journeys related to our clothing, lifestyle and objects and they change over time as we do. What’s past is gone, so it’s not worth dwelling on.

Jessica de Lotz | Designer Spotlight

We get up close and personal with the delicious Jessica de Lotz

How would you describe yourself?
Thrifty, a magpie – pixie, ambitious. My dad says I am like a mole creatively ‘burrowing away.’

Tell us a bit about your job and why you love it.
I set up my business in 2009 having graduated from CSM the year before. I’d already very much established my interests and direction of my work so I was eager to get going.
I get very involved in the story telling element of my work  so the initial making process of each collection is very personal to me but I have several invaluable assistants that help out on the bench from there on. I love nothing more than finding myself lost in a foreign flea market or brocante, surrounded by antiques, curios, love letters and treasured trinkets. My serendipitous finds then fuel my creativity. I collect and gather, knowing that somewhere along the line I will take inspiration from these ‘things’ and will somehow breathe life into them. The final outcome will be a new treasure, that will be fuelled by the past but reappreciated in the present.
Designing and making jewellery gives me the opportunity to create beautiful objects that preserve memories and behold sentimentality. Jewellery is a very personal investment that lasts forever.  I like to think that I will always be a part of the journey & ultimately, the history of each piece, from it’s nurtured beginning to eventually becoming a treasured heirloom.

Who would you love to see wearing your pieces?
Helena Bonham Carter is a fan already and parades around in my Red Resin Apple Necklace quite often. The icing on the cake, would be to see Helena Bonham Carter arm in arm with Tim Burton wearing several of my cheeky Winking Dolly Eye Rings.
If I am allowed to include the deceased in my answer, Shiaparelli!

Which pieces do you find yourself wearing all the time?
I layer my jewellery – More is always more! I am never without a stack of Personalised Wax Seal Bangles jingling away, my Red Relished Necklace and Handcuff Necklace.
I used the intertwined ‘NJ’ wax seal that we stamped on all our wedding stationary etc to make myself an 18ct yellow gold bangle. This piece holds very special memories for me.

What reactions do people have to your jewellery?
Depends which piece you mean. The personalised wax seal pieces are my signatures and best sellers and these are generally universally liked across all ages . They are decorative and antique looking in style, albeit with a modern twist but certainly far from minimal so this doesn’t suit everyone. Something like the Winking Dolly Eye Ring or Red Relished Apple necklace is a ‘different kettle of fish.’ You like them or hate them. The Dolly Eye Ring in particular has received people openly declare that that they are scared by it. They are clearly one of those who hate it! I secretly giggle as truly and honestly, I like to create a response from some of my pieces. I don’t expect to sell as many of these ones anyway but they are interactive, playful and compliment all my signature wax seal pieces.
When I bring out my Light Switch Rings and demonstrate how they fit into the light switch cases, people look at me as if I’m a magician!

What kind of woman wears Jessica de Lotz Jewellery?
Self assured. Appreciative of elements of nostalgia and story telling. I don’t follow trends or care much for them but confidently do my own thing and I hope that my customers, become collectors of my jewellery to satisfy their desire to own something precious that lasts forever, not for a quick fix fashion statement.

What or who inspires you?
I collect antiquities and bizarre curiosities of which inspire me to imagine the stories behind them, and create pieces of jewellery which place them in a context, most clearly seen in my collection called ‘Until the Daybreak.” From this collection, the Light Switch Rings and my first wax personalised seal piece was born.
I have further developed my A to Z wax seal service into a bespoke crest and monogram service called “Jeweller for Life” in collaboration with my brother Benjamin. We create a contemporary family crest or monogram for each client, which I incorporate into a range of wearable jewellery.

What’s your most treasured possession?
After 6 years of Nathan & I ‘dating’ he popped the question and blessed me with his mother’s engagement ring, that she had offered him to give me. Nathan’s father died when he was younger and his mother, Joy remarried so I feel very privileged to to have been given this beautiful ring. The fact that his aunt is also a jeweller and made it, was just the icing on the cake! This is my most treasured possession.

If you could design jewellery in any decade which would you choose?
Through the tributes that I make, lots of my work is inspired by the concepts behind mourning jewellery. The craftsmanship acquired to make Victorian jewellery is astounding so this would be my era of choice.

What was the last exhibition / film / concert / play you went to etc….
The best exhibition i saw recently was Tim Walker’s – ‘Story Teller’ at Somerset House. His work encompassed everything that I love about playful surrealism.
I was at The Turner Museum in Margate this weekend but wasn’t greatly taken by the main exhibition. Located in a very old fashioned sea side town, (home to Tracy Emin) I actually like the museum’s somewhat imposing modern building. I’m sure the residents beg to differ though!
The last film I saw was ‘The Sessions’ at The Curzon which was incredible moving.  My tears got the better of me towards the end. The last play I saw was just before Christmas when I treated the divine, Miss Clarice Price Thomas to a see Michael Bourne’s ‘Sleeping Beauty at Saddler’s Wells. I love it there!

EC One have a Lyrical collection inspired by song lyrics, what’s your favourite song lyric?
In terms of designing a collection around actual lyrics, i’m not sure as I have to say, i’m not one to listen to lyrics too closely but I know what song always make me very happy and dance around my workshop and it is ‘Twistin the Night Away’ by Sam Cooke. In fact, any Sam Cooke or Fleetwood Mac. Both remind me of fun times.

If you could be anywhere in the world right now where would it be?
On Pyramid Lake (Jasper) in Canada floating on a canoe with Nathan, surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

If you could have one wish granted…
I wish that my nanny, Winnie was alive. When she was still with us, I was that bit too young to appreciate her fully and learn all the wonderful lessons from her that I feel my sister’s did. Even so, I can proudly say that she was an incredibly capable and admirable women and ultimately the pillar of our family. Thanks to Nanny, she has left a very close and happy family to continue her legacy,

What do you do when you’re not making / designing?
I love the escapism that I get from Bikram yoga and next month, i am trying my hand at taxidermy. It’ll be an ethically sourced squirrel of course. I can’t wait!

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Meatballs at Polpo

Other than jewellery do you have any hidden talents?
It not exactly a talent but i think that i have a positive, happy energy.

What trends will you be rocking this season?
I have always been a fan of wearing (probably too making different monochrome prints) in an outfit, brightened by flashes of red ~ obviously, usually in the form of my Red Relished Apple necklace.

What’s your biggest fashion regret?
Probably being a little too thematic in my dressing. The first time I met my sister’s husband, I was head to toe dressed as a sailor. Original sailor’s shirt, red wool trousers and even a captain’s hat. I am sure that my best friends could give you far worse examples though but maybe, just maybe I am slightly holding back asking them.

Thanks Jessica! It’s been lovely getting to know you a bit better and finding out what inspires your truly unique collection.

Alice Menter: Hot 100

Bristol based jewellery designer, Alice Menter, is someone to watch. First inspired by the tribes of Northern Thailand, Alice explores the boundaries between jewellery and body adornments; found objects and purpose-designed jewellery. Taking everyday metal objects such as nuts and washers, Alice encorporates them into her designs, creating bold yet delicate statement jewellery pieces. Included in Professional Jeweller’s “Hot One Hundred,” Alice Menter’s collections are truly admired by all and we are very excited to stock her latest pieces. I spoke with her about her about her inspirations and aspirations…

You say that you were first inspired by the tribes in Thailand. Does your style still draw inspiration from them?
My ideas have progressed, they have a stronger design and more attention to detail. Current fashion is evolving and I am very influenced by fashion, but also chainmail, metallic things and vintage glamour. I also love faceted beads and the 1930s style of heavily beaded things.

If you could be a designer in any era, which would it be?
Now because anything goes. Jewellery is now an integral part of an outfit, it is taken seriously. Fashion jewellery has really boomed in the last 10 years and it was only really starting when I went to university.

gold-nut-cuff-in-press

What can we expect from you in the next year?
More specific looks. I am casting nuts to make silver and gold rings. My inspiration at the moment is found objects but I’m taking them to a new level by adapting them to their new function – sort of upcycling.

What reactions do you get from people about your jewellery?
People are surprised when I show them what components I have used to make my jewellery (the nuts and washers). They like how they are transformed. The jewellery has more of a story and it can be appreciated from 2 angles.

What Does the Alice Menter Woman look like?
Strong, stylish, independent, glamerous..She is any age from 18-60. I think my jewellery can transform a look. Wear a Gold Nut Cuff  with jeans and it’s punky or a glamourous dress and it adds to that. My Gold and Silver String Earrings are the same; you can dress down with them but with a simple outfit they create glamour.

Which pieces do you wear?
The Gold Cuff and the Gold and Silver String Earrings.

What Makes you heart skip a beat?

Waking up with a fresh idea.

…And your biggest fear?
Running out of ideas.

Oh no! That’s very unlikely. Alice’s exquisite work is featured in our newsletter this week. You can sign up to receive weekly news from EC One on our homepage and receive 10% off your first web order.

Clarice Price Thomas: Winner Of Unsigned 2011

by press@econe.co.uk

Clarice Price Thomas won EC One Unsigned 2011 with her debut collection “Time”.  Her prize was to have EC One as her first stockist along with valuable advise from Ali and Jos who have over 40 years of  jewellery marketing and design experience between them. We met Clarice for a coffee to talk about her experience of winning Unsigned.

clarice

What Was The Best Thing About Winning Unsigned?

It was Ali and Jos’ advice on things I’d not had help with before, like pricing and design. As the daughter of a watch and clock-maker I think I had that unique idea for my jewellery but I didn’t know what to do next. Ali and Jos helped me refine it into something really special with good price points and all of the logistical things I hadn’t really thought about! They have helped me get a lot further than I could have otherwise.

Tick Tock Earrings

What was it about your watches and Dad’s workshop that inspired you?

I love watch-making machines and tools, especially the milling machines and the lathes. Traditional watch-making tools are amazing. In Dad’s workshop there are draws full of old watch movements, cogs and gears. I used to spend hours taking apart (and trying to put back together) old watches. I still use his workshop to cut the cogs and gears for my jewellery.

Clarice Price Thomas

How did you hear about Unsigned?

I heard about it in 2010 when Myia Bonner won. I loved her work and I was interested to follow her progress throughout the year. I noticed how quickly she was moving forward compared to other graduates. I didnt want to miss out and I had nothin to loose, so I entered Unsigned in 2011!

What is your advice for this year’s entrants to Unsigned?

A clean, sharp image that sums up your work is really important. Choose something big and showy, which draws people in and tells your story in one image. If you get picked to be in the top ten, which you just hope for, you have to push it on facebook and get as much support as you can from friends and family. Then if you can get through that, its all about impressing the judges!

Clarice Price Thomas

What is your favourite piece from your “Time” Collection?

The piece I like to wear is a medium gold cog ring. I also wear some of the statement pieces like the big Tick and Tock earrings, but it is this ring that is my “easy to wear” piece which goes with anything.

Niessing Tension Rings

“The most beautiful way of setting a stone…”

In 1979 goldsmiths at Niessing invented an incredible ring whose diamond solitaire appears to float freely, unsuported by bezel or claws, but held in place only by the tension of the ring. The gem is therefore visible from all sides, and can fully reveal its brilliance and its fire.
